The research carried out at ULisboa takes place in the Schools and R&D Units in the areas of their specific remits.
ULisboa's 70 Research Units are divided into 6 scientific domains:

- Engineering Sciences and Technology
- Medical and Health Sciences
- Agricultural Sciences
The research community is open, collaborative and international, helping to give ULisboa a privileged position in the main international rankings. ULisboa is among the 150 best universities in the world in the CWTS/Leiden and Scimago rankings. It is also the top Portuguese university in the Shanghai/ARWU ranking, in the 201-300 bracket, as well as one of the best in Ibero-America. In the CWTS/Leiden rankings, it is 1st in scientific output in the Iberian Peninsula and 28th in Europe.
