Summary Description and Objectives: The Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMDUL) originated in the then-called Escola Superior de Medicina Dentária de Lisboa, created by Decree-Law of June 6th, 1975. It was later integrated into the University of Lisbon by resolution of its Senate on February 1st, 1991. In order to better take advantage of the existing building after the recent merger of the old University of Lisbon with the Technical University of Lisbon, FMDUL gave the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon (IGOT ULisboa) the building of the former vocational training center. The latter, partially unoccupied as a result of the end of teaching professional training courses by FMDUL, still hosted bachelor's degrees in Oral Hygiene and Dental Prosthesis. The building was in a state of advanced degradation, already lacking the ideal conditions to provide quality education. The delivery of this building to IGOT ULisboa and the adaptation of the FMDUL spaces to accommodate these two bachelor's degrees resulted in an improvement in teaching conditions and a very significant saving in terms of energy costs and maintenance of the facilities. The integration of the students of these two degrees in a common space, shared with the students of the integrated master's degree in Dentistry, allowed them to have easy access to all infrastructures and equipment, namely to university clinics and research laboratories, further qualifying them for their full integration into the labor market. The adaptation of the old Library to the new Prosthesis Laboratories allowed the creation of a high quality space, which guarantees its users hygiene and safety conditions. They are modern laboratories, possessing all the necessary infrastructures for teaching in accordance with the best international standards. In recent years there has been a great technological evolution in the area of dental prosthesis with the emergence of new materials, equipment and manufacturing techniques, allowing these new laboratories to implement their teaching. These new facilities will have a very significant impact in terms of innovation and competitiveness of Portuguese dental prosthesis production laboratories, either by improving the training of undergraduate students, or by allowing education activities that increase the qualification of professionals in the field.

Operation Lisboa-01-0162-FEDER-001187 designated “Remodeling and adaptation of spaces for the External consultation, multipurpose room and Dressing rooms of the North Building of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Lisbon” approved by the PORLISBOA Directive Commission on 05/28/2015 an ERDF financial contribution was allocated, under an overbooking scheme, in the amount of € 81,580.98 corresponding to 40% of the approved total eligible expenditure, amounting to € 203,952.46.
