Microorganisms are the central actors of life on planet Earth, being endowed with an absolutely unique adaptability and transforming power. No ecological process occurs without the direct or indirect intervention of microorganisms. The global awareness of the importance of microorganisms as agents of health and disease, and as catalysts of processes and products, reinforces the importance of advanced training in Microbiology. This importance will be amplified in the near future, considering the aims of sustainable development and the paradigms for the coming decades in the area of planetary health, biodiversity, sustainability, and circularity of resources. Microbiology is, therefore, currently one of the scientific-technological areas with the greatest expansion, covering various high-growth/high-value segments of the international market.

- Through an interdisciplinary advanced training programme, the Master in Applied Microbiology (mMAP) offers students integrated scientific training focused on the ecological, evolutionary, genomic, physiological, molecular, metabolic and functional processes that involve, at different scales, microorganisms and their interactions. The focus is on the integration of knowledge for solving problems and the reinforcement of the technological dimension and societal vocation of Applied Microbiology.
- Making use of the excellence in research and innovation activities and infrastructures of the Ciências ULisboa ecosystem, the course structure of this Masters combines core training in microbiology with a strong experimental and entrepreneurial profile, emphasizing the development of societal profiles and specialisation in the fields of planetary health, food, agriculture, sustainability, environment, biotechnology and ecosystem engineering, responding to current global challenges.
- By means of a Mentorship cand a solid training programme based on the mechanistic knowledge of microbiological phenomena and processes, the acquisition and consolidation of laboratory skills, the knowledge and integration of large-scale approaches to generate biological data, as well as the comprehensive use of data analysis tools, the mMAP stimulates critical thinking, promoting, in a structured way, the creativity and entrepreneurship required for research, development and innovation in each of the intervention areas of Microbiology.
