Biomedical Engineering focuses on the development of new innovative technological solutions to solve problems in sectors such as healthcare, fundamental medicine and clinical medicine. A biomedical engineer is capable of: designing new equipment for medical imagiology, biomedical devices; producing biomaterials; developing management health systems support tools; or even developing new applications by using cell and tissue engineering for diagnosis, follow-up and medical treatment.

The Master in Biomedical Engineering is a joint initiative of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Faculty of Medicine of University of Lisbon.

Objectives 

Upon completion of this cycle of studies (CS), students are expected to hold:
• solid technical and scientific background;
• the ability to formulate and solve complex health problems using engineering principles and solid mathematical
and technical-scientific tools,
• theoretical and experimental preparation to develop research work in basic or applied science, analyzing data and drawing conclusions on a scientific basis;
• the ability to establish and lead cohesive and efficient teams, as well as to set clear goals, design realistic work plans and meet deadlines;
• specific training suited to carry out functions the industry;
• the capacity to develop their professional activity based on educated information and judgments, following an
ethical assessment of their global economic, environmental and societal impact;
• a sustained attitude of constant intellectual learning, updating and flexibility and openness, throughout their
working life.

Career prospects 
Técnico MSc graduates in Biomedical Engineering may work in industry, hospitals, state-based regulatory authorities for health care and: • develop and commercialize health care equipment and do research; • design and test new products within an industrial context; • work in consultancy in health systems and technical functions, aiming at the selection and use of medical equipment and supervision of its performance and maintenance; • develop projects that need in-depth knowledge of living systems and technology; • do scientific research; • work in consultancy and leadership, supervision and management; • follow a career in vocational training and teaching.
