The doctoral degree is the highest degree achieved at IST. The doctorate is not only providing experience and expertise to follow an academic and/or research career in industry, but also promotes leadership skills, breadth of knowledge and mental flexibility. In this context, the doctoral program in materials engineering offers an advanced and rich educational experience, which is rigorous, challenging and of high value for a future career involving the application of knowledge in any materials related field. The program will develop expertise, depth, confidence and creativity to solve problems, as well as advanced knowledge in materials science and engineering. The Materials Engineering Ph.D. program fits within the 3rd cycle of Higher Studies established by the Law Decree 74/2006.

Objectives

The objectives of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in materials science and engineering is to educate and train highly qualifed individuals to perform original, cutting-edge research in materials science, particularly in the areas of structural materials (including nanomaterials), nano/micro electronic materials, optical and magnetic materials, polymeric materials, energy materials, 2D materials, as well as advanced characterization and processing of materials. Upon graduation, these individuals will become an important added value for the academic and/or industrial institutions and thus contribute to the new economy.

Career prospects
The Ph.D. program seeks to train highly specialized researchers in Materials Engineering, who may pursue their activities, in Portugal or abroad, in higher education institutions, research Laboratories or industrial companies.
National Admission Exams
Students with a pré-Bologna BSc degree and/or a MSc degree in Materials Engineering (or similar area) may apply to the Doctoral Program on Materials Engineering. In general, students who show gaps in their knowledge may have to be approved in 1 or 2 courses (master/2nd cycle level).
