The PhD in Anthropology of the Universidade de Lisboa (DANT.ULisboa) is a joint programme of the Instituto de Ciências Sociais (ICS) and the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP), with the colaboration of the Faculdade de Letras (FLUL).
The doctoral programme brings together the two Schools of ULisboa that conduct teaching and research in anthropology. The collaboration of FLUL adds to the PhD a productive dialogue with comparative cultural and postcolonial studies.
Specialties
The degree of Doctor in Anthropology is awarded in the specialties of Anthropology of Material Culture, Anthropology of Economics and Labour, Anthropology of Ethnicity and Politics, Anthropology of Religion and Symbolism, Anthropology of Health, Anthropology of Kinship and Gender, or Anthropology and History.

Objectives

DANT.ULisboa is a four-year research-oriented programme. The first year, propaedeutic and probationary, has a teaching component that accompanies the work of consolidating the thesis project, under individual supervision. Subsequent years are dedicated to research development and thesis writing, with permanent and personalized guidance, and regular presentation and discussion of ongoing work and results in research seminars.

We welcome students who wish to develop innovative research using different methodologies, from fieldwork to archival research. We also encourage the plurality of themes and theoretical approaches, within the heritage of anthropology and in its intersections with other social sciences and humanities.

DANT.ULisboa professors and PhD students carry out research in several countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, mainly, but not exclusively, in countries with historical relations with Portugal and in the respective diasporas. Our research privileges theoretically informed ethnographic practice and comparative study, as well as attention to the historicity of social life, the dynamics of power and differentiation and the processes of sociocultural transformation, both past and contemporary.

At DANT.ULisboa, students find a dynamic and internationalized scientific community and enjoy the circulation of researchers and the research networks established with several universities of international importance in the field of anthropology and the social sciences in general.

We aim to train qualified anthropologists, capable of mobilizing the discipline's cognitive capital, its exposure to cultural diversity and its methodological creativity, in order to respond to contemporary challenges, identifying problems, equating research programmes and developing or mediating interventions with social impact.

Career prospects
The PhD in Anthropology provides a wide range of advanced skills in the research of different social and cultural phenomena, enabling graduates to pursue an academic research career or to carry out professional activities in central, regional and municipal administration bodies, international organizations, social communication media, and non-governmental organizations.
