The PhD in Portuguese as a Foreign Language/Second Language allows for the development of original and in-depth research on the teaching/learning process of Portuguese as a Foreign Language/Second Language, training for the management and development of projects in the field of linguistic, cultural, literary and multicultural studies, in the scientific domain of Portuguese Language and Culture. This course is organized into six semesters (180 ECTS). It begins with the attendance of a two-semester doctoral course (60 ECTS), consisting of four mandatory and one optional seminars. This is followed by four semesters of autonomous research and writing of the doctoral thesis, under the supervision of one or more professors (60 ECTS).
Taught by a faculty specialized in the area and internationally recognized, it allows a close relationship with the research developed by several centers of the University of Lisbon: the Center for Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL), the Center for Classical Studies and the Center for Studies Comparatists (CEC, FLUL); and the Faculty of Arts and humanities of the University of Coimbra, the Center for the Study of General and Applied Linguistics (CELGA-ILTEC).

Objectives 

The study programme aims at training researchers interested in the process of teaching / learning PLE / PL2 at all levels and wants to raise the knowledge of students to the highest standards of quality and academic integrity. The aim is to not only prepare trainers and researchers, but also develop individual management skills and projects within linguistic, cultural, literary and multicultural studies. This project is in tune with the current offer of PhD programmes in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities of the University of Lisbon, and it also meets the requirements recently set in the European educational space.

Those listed in Art. 26 of the University of Lisbon Postgraduate Studies Regulation (Ordinance No. 2950/2015, DR, 2nd series, No. 57, 23 March 2015). Candidates have to match one of the three following requirements: a) hold an MA degree or equivalent; b) hold a BA degree, or equivalent, as well as an academic or scientific curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as relevant for attending the programme, thus attesting the student’s skills for this purpose; c) exceptionally, hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as showing their ability to become a student at the PhD programme.
