This course is organized into eight semesters (240 ECTS). It begins with the attendance of a doctoral course (120 ECTS), consisting of eight semesters, which culminate in the presentation and public discussion of a thesis project. Doctoral course seminars can be held at the Faculty of Arts and humanities or at another national or foreign university, and can also be replaced by participation in research projects or by carrying out a supervised work plan. and writing of the doctoral thesis, under the supervision of one or more professors (120 ECTS).
Taught by a diverse, specialized and internationally recognized faculty, it fosters a close relationship with the research developed at the Center for Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL).
The Programme aims at promoting the student’s ability to develop autonomous research. The specific learning outcomes are: (i) to acquire knowledge in a stimulating research environment; (ii) to deepen the ability to bethink central aspects of the selected topic; (iii) to increase the skills for critical reasoning; (iv) to develop the ability to identify research problems, to formulate and test hypotheses, thus providing new results in the field.
The Porgramme is organised according to topics under debate in Linguistics and relates the identification of problems to the presentation of concepts, theories and techniques which lead the student to formulate questions and to plan research. Both reading and research will be performed in contact with teachers, PhD students and supervisors. This academic interaction has its natural environment in the CU and at CLUL. In parallel, the strong tutorial component promotes the development of the individual research projects.
