The PhD in Portuguese and Romance Studies aims to carry out significant and original research in the broad domain of Literature and Cultural Studies applied to Romance language contexts.
The PhD in Portuguese and Romance Studies is organized in eight semesters (240 ECTS). It starts with attending a doctoral course (120 ECTS), consisting of four semesters. This is followed by four semesters of autonomous research and writing of the doctoral thesis, under the supervision of one or more professors (120 ECTS). At the end of the fourth semester, the doctoral students present their thesis project, which is evaluated in intermediate tests by a jury.
Note: This PhD only accepts applications for Portuguese Studies in 2022/2023.
Those interested in a Doctorate in Romanic Studies should apply for the new Doctoral course in Literatures, Arts and Modern Cultures, in the specialties of French, Italian, Spanish, Hispanic-American Studies.

Objectives 

The main objective of this PhD programme is to promote research. By means of theoretical research, the PhD course aims at, on one hand, providing the students with skills of systematic understanding and research methods in the field of what is broadly known as Literary and Cultural Studies focused on those using Romance languages. On the other hand, the course aims at contributing to enlarge, deepen and constantly refresh the knowledge about those literatures and cultures through the promotion of individual and colective research.
This PhD programme also aims at matching its broad field with contemporary social and cultural reality.
