Objectives

The Master Programme in Mathematics has a dual purpose. On the one hand, the student should acquire a solid background in the fundamental areas of Pure Mathematics, namely Algebra, Analysis and Geometry, thus becoming equipped with a panoramic view of the present-day mathematical landscape. On the other hand, the student will have in the Dissertation his first experience of immersion in depth in research, deepening his knowledge on a specific field of Pure or Applied Mathematics, under the supervision of a Professor of the Department of Mathematics.

The Study Plans are tailored individually for each student, according to his/her needs and interests, by the Coordination, respecting the general conditions laid out in detail in the button Additional Information. The courses offered in the Program change in each academic year, so that each student may maximize the diversity of his/her learning and pursue his/her scientific interests in the course of his/hers academic path.

The faculty at the Department of Mathematics has a large experience in in teaching and supervising postgraduate studies and is very active in research, in cooperation with the international-level research centres with which they are associated. The Department of Mathematics also develops a large number of international collaborations; postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to participate in departmental life through seminar, short courses and conferences, getting actively involved in a stimulating research environment.

Career prospects
Advanced training in Mathematics and the abilities for analytical reasoning and abstract thought characteristic of Mathematics, as well as the development of the abilities to represent, model and quantitatively analyse phenomena or structures are skill which are especially valued in specific sectors of the labour market. Alumni of this Programme are highly successful professionals in public or private institutions, particularly in the sectors of banking, insurance, telecommunications, financial consulting, computing and engineering. Some students further carry on to very successful Ph.D. studies, opting for an academic and research career.
